Garbine Muguruza finished her 2021 season on a high note with a triumph at the WTA Finals and looking ahead to 2022 the Spaniard is focused on winning events.
The triumph in Guadalajara allowed her to jump several rankings spots and claim number three with less than 2000 points between her and Barty. The number one spot is not something Muguruza is obsessing over instead focusing on winning events. She came fairly close to winning the Australian Open two years ago that's her goal.
Speaking with Spanish RTVE, she said:
"I was there, now I am going to be there again, great, but I don't want to obsess over it. I prefer to focus on winning tournaments and raising glasses because you can touch that."
Despite a fairly good year overall Muguruza explained that it was very tough because of the rules in place:
"The truth is that it has been a great year, and that has been hard because there have been a lot of protocols, bubbles, at first without an audience, then with some audience. It's been a crazy season with the Olympics involved as well. It has been a year with many challenges, but at the same time, very successful for me."
With the Australian Open coming up she remembered the final two years ago:
"I was on the verge of the trophy in that final. It is a tournament that I like a lot because it is summer, it is Australia and the people there are very fond of sports and understand tennis."
