Former American tennis player Jan-Michael Gambill believes that fellow American Jessica Pegula is now an elite player.
The 29-year-old has been in impressive form in the recent past where she also won the National Bank Canadian Open after beating Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova with a score of 6-1, 6-0 last week.
Talking about Pegula, Gambill was of the opinion that she is now a complete player just like Iga Swiatek and has the ability to take down her opponents.
"She has been on this incredible journey,” he said. “I remember her comments talking about how it was about belief, it was about execution and getting to the top of the game and now that she can take out players like Iga [Swiatek],
"I think she is that complete elite player now. She has sort of risen from a player who is challenging the top to being one of the top players herself.”
Pegula, despite that success in Montreal, will be slightly disappointed with her outing in the ongoing Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) where she lost to Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in the round of 16 tie in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-0.
The New York-born will be hoping that recent defeat will not affect her preparations for the upcoming US Open which is set to begin in less than 10 days’ time.
