Former US Open champion Angelique Kerber books spot in 3rd round

Angelique Kerber is once again playing well at the US Open as the German avenged her French Open loss to Kalinina with a 6-3 6-2 victory.

Angelique Kerber emerged back to form during the grass-court season and the German is yet to properly cool off. While she did not win any titles in that span, Kerber played one of the better tennis on the WTA tour with a consistent level. That continued against Anhelina Kalinina whom she bested in straight sets.

It was a sweet victory for Keber as she lost to Kalinina at the French Open similarly in two sets. In this match, Kerber asserted herself rather early in the match as Kalinina simply could not break through her defence. She got baited into attacking Kerber and did not really work.

She found some rhythm rather late in the set breaking Kerber twice towards the end of it but simply could not hold her own. The 2nd set was the polar opposite of the first set with both players playing rather well on their serve. Kerber was simply better which allowed her to take an early 4-0 lead.

She held it for the rest of the set closing out the quick match with 6-2. A great win for Kerber who is back to playing strong and consistent tennis. Her familiarity with the US Open could make her dangerous in the latter stages of the event.
