Former world number one Switzerland’s
Roger Federer has
heaped praise on America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff.
The 19-year-old once again became the talk of the town, this
time for her performances in the recently concluded US Open.
Gauff went on to win the fourth and final Grand Slam of the
year by beating the world number one Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in the final with
a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Federer, who is rated as one of the greatest players in the history
of men’s singles tennis after winning 20 Grand Slam titles, while talking in a video
posted by Eurosport on the official page on social media platform X — previously
known as Twitter — where he heaped praise on the Atlanta-born and called her ‘incredible’
“The current tennis scene looks good to me,” said the 42-year-old.
“I mean, If I look quickly over to what Coco Gauff did at the US Open, I
thought that was highly special and unique, and I’ve known her for almost five
years now. She’s incredible.”
The victory in New York was indeed a special one considering
her disappointing outing in Wimbledon 2023 where she was knocked out from the first
round after losing to 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin with a score of
6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
However, since then, Gauff has been in great form as before
winning the US Open, she participated in three WTA events and emerged victorious
in two of them.
First, the current world number three won the Citi Open
where she defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the final in straight sets with a
score of 6-2, 6-3.
After that, Gauff went on to secure the title triumph in the
Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) after beating Czech Republic’s Karolina
Muchova in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
