Garbine Muguruza secured another early exit this year with a very poor performance in her opening match at the tennis event in Berlin.
The Spanish player faced a very inspired
Andrea Petkovic who played well enough to secure the win in front of her fans. Petkovic loves to play for the crowd and she certainly fed off the energy of the crowd in this affair. It's a bad start for Muguruza who is considered a very good grass player. The first set was fairly close despite many twists and turns.
Petkovic took a nearly 3-1 lead but Mugurza battled back. The Spaniard applied pressure later on in the match as well with Petkovic barely escaping a late-set loss of serve that would have given Muguruza the perfect chance to win the opening set.
In the tiebreak, Petkovic proved slightly better with Muguruza squandering some very good chances. She served for the set at 6-5 but lost it 10-8 in the end. The final set proved a very tight affair but Petkovic was able to outlast her opponent in a very heated battle. She took an early break and held it for the rest of the match.
Muguruza tried applying pressure but for the most part, Petkovic had no issues in winning games on her serve. After taking the break, she did not allow a single break point.
