Garbine Muguruza had a very tricky first-round matchup at the US Open facing Clara Tauson but Spaniard prevailed in two sets 6-3 7-6(5).
Tauson is a very talented player who hits the ball hard and they are very tricky to play against, especially if you get them on a good day. Today was not perfect for the Danish player but she wasn't poor either. Muguruza was able to use her serve to her advantage hitting a high percentage which made things easier.
She was greatly helped by the Dane who blasted 25 unforced errors in the opening set which was too much. She struggled with controlling the ball, something that Swiatek alluded to when it comes to big hitters. Eventually, she was able to control the ball a bit better in the second set hitting more winners.
Muguruza took the 3-2 lead but gave it right back giving Tauson another chance. She had a brilliant chance to take it at 5-4 when she had 40-0 and three consecutive set points. She squandered all of them and it would prove very costly.
The tiebreak of the 2nd set followed shortly after and despite holding an early 4-1 lead, Tauson was unable to hold on. Muguruza finished it off with 7-5 simply playing the crucial really better all day long.
