A great week for Garbine Muguruza concluded with a trophy at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic. Muguruza had a very unusual week in Chicago playing only 3 matches in total to win the trophy as two of her opponents withdrew prior to the match. Two very good opponents in Azarenka and Vondrousova and therein lies the reason for her slow start in the final today.
In the quarter-final, Muguruza needed time to shake of some rust after not playing in the previous round and today was a similar case. She started off very slow allowing Jabeur to dominate play without even trying too hard. Too many errors early allowed Jabeur an early 3-1 lead and after that, she was able to win the opening set with 6-3.
Jabeur actually broke Muguruza early in the 2nd set as well seemingly taking a huge step towards victory however Mugurza came right back to make it 1-1. Jabeur once again broke her to take a 3-2 lead but Muguruza came right back 3-3. Eventually, she was able to break down Jabeur winning it with 6-3. That proved key in the match as Jabeur completely fell apart after that.
Muguruza reeled off a very dominant performance in the final set winning it with 6-0. The bagel showcased the difference between Muguruza and Jabeur as the Tunisian simply lacked the focus and energy in the final set to overcome a soaring Spaniard.
