The American pairing of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula have seen their hopes of becoming World No.1 in doubles temporarily dashed, following their loss to Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend in the Roland Garros (French Open) semifinals.
Gauff and Pegula had the opportunity to clinch the top spot following the elimination of the top-seeded team of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. However, the increasingly-popular team of Fernandez and Townsend pulled off the upset victory in their final four clash, exacting revenge for a loss to Gauff/Pegula in the final at this year's Miami Open.
Although Gauff had reached the number 1 spot in doubles last year, it was Pegula who led her younger compatriot by 90 points heading into the semifinal. Had the duo won the title at Roland Garros, the 29-year old would reach a new career-high, in addition to becoming World No.1 in doubles for the first time.
