Coco Gauff
continues her streak and breezes past
Marketa Vondrousova to secure a spot
among the top eight at the National Bank Open in Montreal, winning 6-3, 6-0.
The American
has found a new momentum since her early exit from Wimbledon. Last week, she
clinched the title at the DC Open, defeating her opponents with ease to claim
her first WTA 500 title.
With
victories over players like Belinda Bencic, Liudmila Samsonova, and Maria
Sakkari, the 19-year-old tennis player reaffirmed her form this week with a win
against Katie Boulter, positioning herself as a contender for the upcoming US
Open.
In this
match, she faced the most recent Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova. The
Czech player had been the surprise package at SW19, and there were doubts about
whether she could maintain her level during the hardcourt swing.
In her
earlier matches at the
Canadian Open, Vondrousova defeated Mayar Sherif and put
up a fight against Caroline Wozniacki, ultimately advancing to set up another
encounter with a top-10 player. In their previous and only meeting, Gauff
emerged victorious at the 2021 Dubai Open with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The first
set started evenly, with both players exchanging breaks in the opening three
games. Gauff secured another break in the sixth game, which proved decisive.
Although she had a break point at 5-2, the American had to wait until the next
game to close out the set on her serve.
Vondrousova's
spirits dampened in the second set as she faced an early break from a
determined Coco Gauff. Gauff displayed aggressiveness in her returns and left
no room for the recent Wimbledon champion. A dominant 6-0 finish sealed the
victory for the world No. 7, extending her confidence and a winning streak of
seven consecutive matches.
The
quarterfinals will feature an exciting showdown against her friend and doubles
partner, Jessica Pegula. Their most recent encounter was at the Eastbourne Open
during the grass season, where Coco secured a straight-set victory. However,
their only previous hardcourt encounter resulted in a win for Pegula in 2022.
