Camila
Giorgi secured a commanding victory in her dominant performance against Bianca
Andreescu at the National Bank Open (Canadian Open) in Montreal.
The local
tennis player managed to bypass the qualifying rounds, thanks to a wild card
offered by the tournament organizers. Andreescu had positive sensations at
Wimbledon, but her hardcourt swing got off to a challenging start as she fell
in the first round of the DC Open to Marta Kostyuk in a hard-fought three-set
battle (2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) in favor of the Ukrainian).
On Camila
Giorgi's side, she had initially entered Budapest and Warsaw for the weeks
following Wimbledon, but she decided to withdraw due to physical discomfort and
quickly shift her focus towards preparing for the WTA 1000
Canadian Open.
The Italian
player entered the qualifying rounds as the 4th seed, defeating Elvina Kalieva
and Ashley Krueger, both from the United States, to set up a match against the
former US Open champion.
The match
started off evenly, with both players holding their serves in the opening
games. Andreescu had the first two break points of the match in the fifth game,
but she failed to capitalize on them. In the subsequent game, Giorgi
capitalized on her chances and secured the first break of the match, which
proved decisive as she took the set 6-3.
The second
set began with Giorgi's dominant display, as she managed to secure two breaks
in the early stages, putting her ahead 4-0. Andreescu managed to recover by
holding her serve on two occasions and fighting off three match points.
However, the 2021 Canadian Open champion ultimately clinched the match with a
6-2 victory in the second set.
In the
upcoming round, Giorgi will face the 7th seed Petra Kvitova, who received a bye
in the first round. The Czech player has had a remarkable 2023 season that has
propelled her back into the top 10. She secured victory at the 2023 Miami Open,
the previous WTA 1000 tournament contested on hardcourts.
