Angelique Kerber advanced past Petra Kvitova at the Western & Southern Open after the Czech player retired from the match.
Playing tennis yesterday was a struggle for Petra Kvitova who dealt with a stomach issue throughout the match. In the end, it forced her to retire sending Kerber to the semifinal to face Barty. Before Kvitova retired Kerber was in control of the match taking the first set.
The German said after the match that that was not the way she wants to win the match but what can you do. The bumpy road won't get any easier for Kerber who will face an in-form Ashleigh Barty next. On that she said:
“I know that I have to play my best tennis against her. I know that it will be another good match. This is actually why I'm here, to have a lot of good matches against the best players. Tomorrow is another one. I'm looking forward to playing against Ash again."
The duo faced off against each other in the Wimbledon semifinal a month ago where Barty scored a great win over Kerber to send her to her first Wimbledon final. She ended up winning that final against Pliskova.
