The opening day of the WTA Elite Trophy is complete with Beatriz Haddad Maia, Barbora Krejcikova and Zhu Lin respectively taking pole position from their respective groups.

Krejcikova is top seed this week in Zhuhai and came from 3-0 down in the second set to defeat No.11 seed, Magda Linette 6-2, 6-4 in the Azalea Group. She will aim to seal her spot in the semi-finals against Daria Kasatkina on Wednesday.

While Madison Keys who dropped to second seed due to Krejcikova emerging back into the top 10 lost to Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Brazilian has only won five matches since Wimbledon with a back injury ending her run and a freak shower accident in Guadalajara seeing her get stitches in both hands.

She still continued to play winning one match in three tournaments. But seemed to save her return to form for Zhuhai. She saved six out of seven break points she faced. In the first set, she was hit back after going 4-1 up. But Haddad Maia sealed pivotal breaks in both sets to seal it.

While home hope, Zhu Lin perhaps had the display of the day. The Chinese wildcard took down Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(5), 6-1 in the Rose Group to wrap up the day.

As well as Krejcikova returning tomorrow, Keys will face Caroline Garcia aiming to keep her hopes alive. While Zheng Qinwen will open up her campaign against 10th seed Donna Vekic.
