Simona Halep has breezed through her opener at
Roland Garros against Sara Sorribes Tormo and has completed some milestones as a result.
Halep who won 10 straight games after a tough start to the tie in which she went 4-2 down in the first set and claimed it 6-4, 6-0 which continues her career-best 15-match winning streak.
Albeit with Coronavirus seeing her not play from March to her triumph in Prague but she claimed two clay court tournaments on the bounce with Rome as well and came into Roland Garros one of the main favourites.
It is also the 2018 champion's 29th birthday today and she wasted little time on Court Phillipe Chatrier winning in just under an hour and a half. Stats wise, she hit 23 winners albeit with 23 unforced errors.
But the Spaniard hit only 10 winners all match against 16 unforced errors with 60 percent of points for Halep coming off Sorribes Tormo's serve meaning six breaks of serve from nine break points for the number one seed.
She will take on Jil Teichmann of Switzerland or compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu, both of whom know their way around a clay court. For the latter, Halep will have some sort of an idea of where her game is at as they were practicing together in the run-up to the tournament.
Also through is 16th seed
Elise Mertens who saw off Margarita Gasparyan 6-2, 6-3 who will now face the always dangerous Kaia Kanepi who came back to see off another tough test in Marie Bouzkova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
