Simona Halep will play no further part in the Western & Southern Open after handing a walk-over to Veronika Kudermetova due to a thigh injury on Wednesday evening.
The latter will now play Ajla Tomljanovic who saw off Paula Badosa in the early hours and it adds concern for Halep ahead of the US Open which many were expecting she would figure in as a top contender.
This after the former World No.1 showed her best form in a while under Patrick Mouratoglou sealing the National Bank Open but this momentum has been stalled.
But it is another on a list of growing concerns of the WTA side with Coco Gauff suffering an ankle injury, Naomi Osaka not at her best and having achilles and back pain, while Serena Williams is not at her best as she prepares to bow out after Flushing Meadows.
