Romania’s tennis star
Simona Halep’s four-year ban is the
highest for a first-time doping offender.
The 31-year-old received a four-year ban after testing positive
for the banned substance roxadustat during last year’s US Open.
Tennis journalist and broadcaster Gill Gross shared a tweet
where he stated that Halep’s four-year ban is the longest for a first-time
offender.
Things might just get worse for Halep as a new report emerged
in
The Guardian on September 14 where it stated that the tribunal that banned
the former world number one suspects that she was blood doping last year. However,
because of a lack of blood tests, they could not find a definitive answer.
After the verdict, Halep once again reiterated her innocence
and stated that she would fight to clear her name and get her career back on
track.
“Today, a tribunal under the tennis anti-doping programme
announced a tentative decision in my case,” she wrote in a message posted on
social media. “The last year has been the hardest match of my life, and
unfortunately my fight continues.
“I have devoted my life to the beautiful game of tennis. I
take the rules that govern our sport very seriously and take pride in the fact
I have never knowingly or intentionally used any prohibited substance. I
refused to accept their decision of a four-year ban.”
Halep, who has not played any professional match since
September last year, has an impressive record at the highest level.
The Constanța-born has won two Grand Slams in her career and
also registered her spot as the number one player in the WTA rankings in 2017.
Halep’s first major triumph came in the French Open in 2018
where she defeated America’s Sloane Stephens in the final with a score of 3–6,
6–4, 6–1.
A year later, she ended up lifting her second major title
after winning Wimbledon by beating legendary Serena Williams in the final with
a score of 6-2, 6-2.
