Paula Badosa has pulled out of the Indian Wells main draw after continuing to struggle with a back injury. The 2021 champion had already withdrawn a week ago from the WTA 500 Mérida Open, retiring during her quarterfinal match against Daria Saville (6-1, 3-5, ret.) due to discomfort.
Despite this, the Spaniard still traveled to Tennis Paradise to assess her physical condition in California. Initially, Badosa withdrew from the Eisenhower Cup – where she was set to partner with her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas – but kept her main draw participation in doubt.
However, the tournament organizers have now confirmed that Badosa withdrew the night before her scheduled second-round clash against Caroline Dolehide. This marks the second consecutive year she misses Indian Wells due to the same injury.
Currently ranked world No. 8 in the live rankings, Badosa could soon be overtaken by Emma Navarro and Zheng Qinwen if they secure at least one win. Additionally, she risks dropping out of the top 10 should Mirra Andreeva reach at least the fourth round.
"I'm very sorry to withdraw from one of my favorite tournaments," Badosa said in a statement following her withdrawal. "I tried until the last moment to play. I am really sad & hopefully will be back next year!"
With two weeks off ahead, her next possible tournament is the Miami Open. However, no further details have been provided regarding the extent of her back injury, the same issue that sidelined her for much of the 2023 season and has plagued her throughout her career.
2021 champion Paula Badosa has withdrawn due to a low back injury. Eva Lys takes her spot in the draw.
