America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has heaped praise on
the former world number one
Andy Murray for speaking up for women’s tennis. The
20-year-old is often regarded as one of the most highly-rated players currently
playing in women’s tennis in the singles category.
Gauff has recently been quoted in a report where she heaped
praise on Murray for speaking up for women’s tennis. She especially recalled a 2017
press conference where the three-time Grand Slam winner corrected a reporter
about Sam Querry becoming the first US player to reach the semifinal of the Grand
Slam since 2019 by stating that he was actually the first ‘male’ player from
the country to achieve that milestone.
"Yeah, my favorite video of Andy Murray is at the press
conference in Wimbledon where he was, like, the first male player," said Gauff.
"Honestly, it happens a lot in tennis where people say a stat, especially
with the guys. I'll be like, Well, I did it (smiling). It's good when they
specify. I think for what he's done with the women's game, him and his mother
as well, have done a lot. I would say he's one of the first male players to
speak up about it. On court, he's just somebody that I don't get how you can't
look up to him in a way with his situation battling with injuries. He's purely
out here for the joy and the love of the game."
