Iga Swiatek failed to defend her trophy in Indian Wells and she won't defend the Miami Open trophy either leaving her vulnerable to losing her number-one ranking this year.
Swiatek utterly dominated this part o the season last year because it was part of her iconic 30+ match winning streak. It's unlikely she'll do something similar this year and she's already been losing more than last year with neither Sunshine Double trophy defended. That will cost her over 1000 points combined which will give them the chance to other players to close the gap to her in the rankings.
She's also been extremely dominant on clay so there are plenty of more points to be defended and Sabalenka and Rybakina are breathing down her neck. She also has a rib injury now which will certainly impact her playing moving forward as well making things even more complicated.
She has about 3500 points to defend in the clay season with trophies won in Stuggart, Rome and Roland Garros. Should her struggles continue and should she fail to defend all three, she will most likely lose the number one ranking which would be quite shocking considering how well she played last year.
Many expected her to continue her domination this year as well and at times she did but not overwhelmingly.
