Former world number one Tracy Austin expressed admiration
for America’s
Coco Gauff after her triumph at the
US Open.
The 19-year-old is regarded as the most highly-rated player
currently playing in the women’s singles category. Gauff ended up living to the
hype and expectations as she lifted the US Open on home soil after beating the
current world number two Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in the final with a score of
2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Austin was recently quoted in a report where she stated how
she could relate to what Gauff had to go through at the US Open with all the
expectations from the fans.
“A tough first-round loss at Wimbledon motivated her to make
a change, adding the highly experienced Brad Gilbert to her coaching team,” she
said. “She then had a turnaround summer, winning titles in D.C. and
Cincinnati—and arrived in New York with justifiably high hopes. Every time Coco
played, the American crowd was heavily in her corner. And every time, Coco
competed like a champion.
“There was that tricky opener versus crafty Laura Siegemund.
Later, Coco’s semifinal was delayed when a protestor glued his feet to the
ground. And then, in the finals, Coco lost the first set against a red-hot
Aryna Sabalenka. With lots of celebrities and millions cheering her on, Coco
problem-solved her way to the title.”
