Barbora Krejcikova won the 2021 Roland Garros after defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final 6-1 2-6 6-4.
The Czech player fulfilled a longtime dream of hers by winning the Grand Slam and after the match, she was overwhelmed with emotion. It was not her first Grand Slam title as she won two in the doubles before but it was the one that meant to her the most. Ever since she was little she saw herself mainly as a single layer despite early doubles success. Speaking after the match she said:
“I just want to thank everyone for coming and cheering for us today. It was the biggest support, the biggest energy,” Krejcikova said in an on-court interview. In these bad times during this pandemic, it’s very nice to see all of you here. I thank you so much, the atmosphere was amazing."
The Czech player is not done at Roland Garros yet as she plays in the doubles finals with compatriot Siniakova as well. The duo won the French Open doubles title in 2018 and will do the same in 2021. If Krejcikova wins it she will become one of the rare tennis players that was able to do it. Speaking on her feelings after her singles win she said:
“I’m super happy that I was able to enjoy it today in front of you. I’m just really happy. It’s really hard to put words together right now because I can’t believe what just happened.”
