Naomi Osaka suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Leylah Fernandez from Canada who bested Osaka 7-5 6-7(2) 4-6.
The defeat was a shocking one for tennis fans, Osaka fans, tennis analysts and for Osaka herself as she had trouble dealing with it immediately after the match. Osaka looked very good early on and even served for the match but collapsed in a strange way giving the Canadian a chance she snatched.
After the match a tearful Osaka said:
"This is very hard to articulate. Basically, I
feel like I’m kind of at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I
want to do, and I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match. Sorry. I think I’m going to take a break from playing for a while."
The announcement was another shocker that night from Osaka as she hinted at a prolonged break from tennis. Osaka admitted to not feeling any joy from tennis as she used to, saying:
“How do I go around saying this? I feel like for me recently when I win I don’t feel happy. I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad. I don’t think that’s normal. I didn’t really want to cry.”
Osaka could not pinpoint what really went wrong for her in the match however she admitted that she has been dealing with a lot of stuff that was rather known to the public. It remains to be seen when Osaka decides to return to tennis but there is very little desire or passion for it at the moment.
