Coco Gauff eased past Olivia Gadecki in a 6-2, 6-2 win to open her
Roland Garros campaign but amid the debate that has roared surrounding a lack of matches for women in the night session, she has a different view.
Gauff is a player in the past who like Iga Swiatek has offered up the view that she'd rather play early than late and that chimes in here. But she said that while she cannot speak for the whole tour, she doesn't know of any players who want that slot.
That slot being the 8:15 night session match. It is a debate which roars on every year and often sees FFT bosses in hot water over their blatant disregard for the WTA product. It has often come into focus and it has again this year with only men scheduled. But Gauff said she'd rather not play in that slot anyway.
“I think here is a unique topic because there is only one slot at 8:15. To be honest, I don’t think any girl.. I mean, prove me wrong, but I don’t think anyone wants to play after the 8:15 match. I don’t know what the other girls would think, but I think most people would rather play before that," said Gauff.
"Maybe there’s a chance to put someone at 6:30 or 7:00. I think if there is only gonna be one match at 8:15, maybe there could be a women’s match. But if they wanna start the night session at 8:15, I’m sure most girls on tour would rather not play after a men’s match and have to go on at 11:00 or 12:00. I think it’s just tournament to tournament. This tournament, this seems to me what they want. But most tournaments do have the two matches, one starting at 7:00 and one afterwards. I can’t really complain. I think it’s just up to the tournament honestly.”
