Maria Sakkari doesn't feel like a movie star after the Netflix TV series Break Point but she's glad the the show is having an effect on tennis.
Sakkari comes from a tennis family of sorts because her mother played the sport and she's very keen on continuing the legacy of tennis in Greece. Like her compatriot Tsitsipas, she's often talked about wanting to grow the sport back home and that is why she was chosen as one of the players featured in Break Point.
The show proved a success and it was renewed for a second season. Speaking at an event dedicated to that, Sakkari said:
“I don’t think we’re like movie stars right now. It’s just our personalities being exposed — in a good
way. I’ve had people coming up to me and saying I watched you on Break Point, but not playing tennis, which I think was very good for the show. I was happy because that whole thing really helps tennis.”
Sakkari further highlighted how fortunate she was to have such a career:
“I never thought that coming from a very small country I would get
to the ranking level where I was last year. Seeing myself on
TV is nothing that I’m used to. It was kind of weird in a way, but also
nice to see the different players in the episode. It’s the reward for the work I’ve done all these years.”
