Brazil’s tennis star
Beatriz Haddad Maia has revealed how
she miraculously recovered from a finger injury to win the
WTA Elite Trophy.
The 27-year-old defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng in the final
of the competition in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
Haddad Maia,
while talking to the media after the triumph, revealed
how she miraculously recovered from a finger injury that she suffered not so
long ago.
"Today I was trying to be as aggressive as I was during
this week," she said. "My mentality was very important. I was trying
to be patient in the moments things were not going the way that I wanted.
“It's a very special week for me. When I came to Asia, I had
stitches in my fingers in the first round of Beijing and now I'm finishing the
season with a trophy in my hands."
The result will be an important one for Haddad Maia,
especially after having a rather mediocre time in big tournaments in 2023.
The Sao Paulo-born played in the main round of all four
Grand Slams this year but only managed to qualify for the quarterfinal or beyond
on just one occasion.
Her most impressive
outing came in the French Open where she was knocked out of the competition
after losing the semifinal to the current world number two Poland’s Iga Swiatek
in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
