Jannik Sinner after failing to defeat Daniil Medvedev in six previous attempts before the China Open seemingly has the number of the Russian as he sealed the 2023
Vienna Open on Sunday afternoon.
Sinner won the title at the Vienna Open 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in just over three hours. Overall it is a 10th ATP title and a fourth of the season equalling his best from 2021. He has won in Beijing, Toronto and Montpellier prior with two of his titles as a result of winning today being ATP 500's.
The opening set which was taken by Sinner in a tie-break was led by the most part by Medvedev who went 3-1 up and 4-3 up. But Sinner only led in the end in the tie-break as Medvedev spurned set points.
This proved vital as Sinner again survived a set point and had one of his own before converting to seal it 9-7.
It was the tale of two breaks in a row for Medvedev in the second set as Sinner went down 6-4 before a truly remarkable final set. The latter had nine chances to seal the break before finally doing so in a 31 point game.
Only to lose his serve straight back. He could've won a lot easier having a match point at 5-2 up, but Medvedev stayed alive and nearly sent it the distance with Sinner having to wrestle the win on advantage in the end in a gruelling contest.
