Although American tennis star Jessica Pegula has been playing some of the best tennis of her career, this hasn't distracted her from the grave incidents going on in her home nation.
Following the recent tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the 28-year old admitted to being saddened by the event. However, she claims to have not spoken about the incident to other players, as they try to remain focused on tennis.
"To be honest, I have not talked to either of them about it at all. I haven’t talked to any player about it," revealed Pegula. "I don’t know, maybe one time, but usually when we are here we’re just thinking about the next match and tennis.
"And not that that’s more important than what’s going on, but I think here maybe we just try not to think about it. And then usually if you go back to your hotel and you’re on your phone and reading the news and all this stuff is where you kind of come across it more.
"But as far as being on site when we’re getting ready to play doubles or we’re practicing together I haven’t really said anything to them or vice versa.”
Earlier this year, Pegula reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. The Buffalo native finished runner-up in Madrid a few weeks ago, and has climbed to a career-high ranking of World No.11.
Furthermore, the American is currently having her best Roland Garros performance, where she reached the quarterfinal and will face World No.1 Iga Swiatek on Wednesday for a semifinal berth.
