Jessica Pegula started off her Madrid campaign with two strong wins over Giorgi and Kanepi and the American is enjoying a rather good season.
It's been a slow rise for Jessica Pegula who worked her way to the top of women's tennis. The hard work and persistence is something she always carried with herself and it's been really good to see it finally paying off. She has an all-court game and while she prefers faster courts she can play well on slow courts. Madrid is a clay event but the altitude allows it to play much faster than a typical clay court.
Pegula likes that:
"I like the fast clay, it suits my game. Even last year, I was playing well and lost to Sabalenka, who was unstoppable at that tournament.”
She also spoke about her Billie Jean King Cup experience and how that experience changed her approach for Madrid:
“Playing BJK Cup in Asheville, there was a similar altitude. I’ve changed my tension a bit from experiencing that. It's certainly showing so far with the strong displays so far.
