Reigning Australian Open champion
Sofia Kenin is looking to add a second Grand Slam title to her resume, as she moved to the
Roland Garros semifinals on Wednesday.
The fourth seed overcame some aggressive play from compatriot Danielle Collins in their quarterfinal encounter, outlasting Collins 6-4 4-6 6-0 to reach the semifinals for the first time.
“I’m super happy. I know she plays really aggressive and I knew I needed to play aggressive myself, have a high first-serve percentage and I think I did that,” Kenin said after the match.
After exchanging breaks and each woman claiming a set, it was Kenin who dominated in the final set. The 21-year old employed her reliable groundstrokes from the baseline, which saw her obtain multiple breaks before escaping with the win after two hours and four minutes.
“The difference is definitely mental," Kenin added. "I like winning in three sets! I know it’s going to be tough but I got the win and I’m proud of myself.”
The World No.6 faces two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova in the semifinals, as the Czech cruised past German Laura Siegemund 6-3 6-3 earlier in the day.
