There was drama in the
Indian Wells quarterfinal between
Jack Draper and
Daniil Medvedev. The Russian came out a 6-1, 7-5 winner to book his spot in a fourth consecutive Indian Wells semi-final. This, however, did not take the headlines with a controversial point at a crucial time in the match, costing Draper dearly. Many have had their say on it, with world number one
Aryna Sabalenka believing that Medvedev was not that bothered about the movement from Draper.
At 5-5 in the second set, Draper was 0-15 down. He was serving to take a slender lead at a hugely critical time in the match. The reigning champion raised his arms in the air partway through the next point, with Medvedev eventually hitting the ball into the net. The Russian followed this by asking for a video review, with him believing that he was hindered by the Brit's movement. The umpire agreed and handed the point to Medvedev. He would go on to break and served it out moments later to set up a semi-final tie against Carlos Alcaraz.
Not surprisingly,
Draper was not happy about either the decision or Medvedev, who acted in the situation. "You won the match fair and square, but I don't think it distracted you enough,” Draper commented to his opponent. Medvedev was sympathetic in his response. “I don't feel great. I understand.”
In his press conference, he was also conflicted with his decision at the time. "Was I distracted big time? No. Was I distracted a bit? Yes. Is it enough to win the point? I don't know."
Sabalenka not convinced by Medvedev's decision
Sabalenka is one step ahead of Medvedev in the tournament, already booking her spot in the
final after defeating Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4. Another final against Elena Rybakina is on the cards in a hugely anticipated clash.
However, before that, she was asked for her opinion about the Draper-Medvedev incident in her
press conference after taking down the young Czech. She was first quizzed on why there have been more video reviews being utilised in recent times, with her even being affected in Australia at the start of the year.
"Well, I don't know. Maybe just ref - actually, I feel like what happened to Daniil, he asked for Video Review, right?" she said. "What happened to me, I just feel like the referee wanted to, you know, show that she's working there, she's aware of all of that stuff. I rewatched my video, and I felt like there was nothing, like, even Elina was shocked there. She was, like, What happened? So I don't know. I feel like -- I don't know. It's tricky one."

She felt that Medvedev was not at the end of that much hindrance that he deserved to claim the point. "I feel like, with me, it was unnecessary for the referee to call that one. About Daniil yesterday, I mean, theoretically he did the move, but I don't think it actually bothered Daniil that much."
She felt like Medvedev should not have waited till the end of the point to ask for a video review. "What I think is really awkward is you can actually finish the point and then ask for that," she admitted. "Because if you really got bothered, then you should stop immediately and ask for the Video Review, giving players opportunity to finish the point."
The Belarusian would much prefer if the call was done then rather on delaying it till the end. "It's kind of, like, if he would win that point, he wouldn't probably ask for Video Review, obviously, right? I don't really think that's the way it should be, like, if he got bothered, then ask for the Video Review straightaway."
