The American scored yet another great victory in Adelaide where she advanced to the semifinal.
The victory was a hard-fought one as she lost the opening set to Rogers 6-2 before coming back to win the next two. In both of those sets she was down twice but each time she found a way to come back and win. On the bad start Gauff said:
"In the first set she came out swinging and I couldn't really play it safe because she was punishing me for hitting the ball short, so that set just went by super quickly."
And indeed Gauff was quickly overwhelmed by Rogers at the beginning but explaining what worked later she said:
"I kind of went down in the second set and I just kept fighting for every point, really. I knew I needed to be aggressive if I wanted to win and I think I stepped up in the moments where I needed to."
For Gauff matches like these give her the experience that she needs and she realizes how much experience matters. Explaining that she said:
"At the end of the day, I need more matches under my belt. I'm still new and need a lot more experience, and it definitely plays a role."
She further elaborated how she underestimated experience early on in her career:
"I didn't realize how much a role experience plays until I started playing some players who are a lot older than me and they know what to do. Even when it comes to the little mind games and all that, they know what to do in those moments. So I'm just learning and picking up a few tricks as I go."
