Patrick Mouratoglou worked with
Coco Gauff in the past giving the American phenom some tips while she was using his facilities in the south of France.
The French coach was always impressed by Gauff, both in tennis skills and her maturity. He closely followed her run at the
US Open and recently gave his thoughts on what has happened. Talking about Coco he first explained that she'll handle the disappointment well:
“She seems like an incredibly mature young woman to me and could maybe cope with it. It’s
a lot of pressure. But I am 100 per cent sure she can handle it. She
already handles it well, because she’s really under the spotlight since
she was 15, with a crazy pressure.”
He further explained how progress is clearly visible in her game despite the lack of silverware:
“I see her progress and it is impressive. I
see also improvements in the game that are impressive too. And I think
this US Open and first she was unlucky to play Garcia, because I think
she and Caroline were the two best players of the tournament [up to that
point] without any doubt.
Mouratoglou added:
If she would have played her in the final it would have been different, but that’s the game. And
maybe she would need a few more months to be a little step ahead in
terms of being able to handle the pressure that was huge in that
quarter-final. It is just a question of time. I have no doubt that she will become a leading figure for WTA the future.”
