Mirra Andreeva created a memorable moment in a pre-Rome Open interview, revealing she doesn't pay too much attention to her ranking. While answering questions from Tennis Channel, the teenager provided an amusing exchange.
Having just turned 18 last week, Andreeva has already achieved enviable milestones for any player. She secured her first title last year at the Iasi Open and won a silver medal in the Olympic Games doubles alongside her partner Diana Shnaider.
However, her significant leap to the top of the rankings occurred in the first part of the year, during a 13-match winning streak where she consecutively won two WTA 1000 titles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and the Miami Open, propelling her into the top 10 for the first time.
At the recent Madrid Open, she once again demonstrated her ability to contend for major titles, achieving another deep run to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual finalist Coco Gauff. Nevertheless, Andreeva is currently at her career-high ranking of world No. 7 (reached on March 31, 2025, having peaked at No. 6 on March 17, 2025), less than 100 points away from the top 5 and remarkably third in the WTA Race – meaning based on points accumulated in 2025.
During her Tennis Channel interview, Andreeva provided a funny moment, once again showcasing her charismatic personality. "I honestly don't feel like I'm a top-10, you know, because it happened so quickly so I still need kind of realize that I was there, I think. Now I'm no top-10 yet? Or am I?," the somewhat unsure teenager asked, to which Steve Weissmann replied affirmatively. "Oh I am, wow, that's great," Andreeva responded spontaneously, prompting laughter from interviewers Weissmann and Prakash Amritraj.
“I feel like it's easier not to pay attention to what's my ranking, what are the positions, how everything changes or moves,” she added. “Obviously I know that I'm probably still in Top 10. I checked a week ago, so it was still like this! Yeah, I'm just [trying] not to pay attention to what's going on, just do my thing, do it the best way I can.”
Andreeva will make her second appearance at the Rome Open and will seek her first victory at the tournament after losing in the first round last year to Paula Badosa. This time, Andreeva entered as the 7th seed, granting her a first-round bye. She awaits her opponent from the winner of the match between Viktoriya Tomova and a qualifier.
