Jessica Pegula expressed her opinion that any player can compete in tournaments despite the dominance of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina.
The American spoke with Eurosport during the pre-2023 French Open activities and commented on the emerging rivalry among the "Big Three" players in the WTA. With Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Rybakina as overwhelming favorites in each tournament, world number 3 Jessica Pegula said that any player can still win tournaments:
"Yeah, it's kind of fun to have more of a 'Big Three' on the women's side. I think still anybody can win any tournament any week, but I think they've definitely stepped up, obviously.
"Iga [Swiatek] has been at the top and then seeing Aryna [Sabalenka] be right there and break through this year at the Australian Open along with Elena [Rybakina] last year at Wimbledon."
Pegula highlighted the differences in the personalities of the three players and expressed her desire to continue improving in order to challenge them:
"So it's been very interesting and I think they all are so different, personality-wise, and in the way they play.
"It's been really fun to kind of watch them and also challenge myself as well to see how I can, you know, play better and really challenge them and hopefully get wins against them."
Pegula faces a tough challenge in her debut at the French Open, where she is the third seed, as she was drawn against her compatriot Danielle Collins. She mentioned that her goal is to reach at least the quarterfinals, especially considering that clay is not her favorite surface:
"I hope to make another quarterfinal. I think that would be another amazing result for me, especially on clay, but yeah, I think to go further, I think you have to get to those points first and you have to just keep playing your game every single match.
"And I think that's what helps build confidence and takes you through the later rounds," claimed Pegula.
