One of the main causes of Maria Sakkari's chance to play the WTA Finals was her run to the title at Guadalajara bringing her into contention and many see the Greek ace as a potential outsider to seal the title in Cancun.
Sakkari herself called Mexico her second home during the WTA Finals gala which saw her drawn alongside Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula in a Group of Death scenario.
But one thing that the Greek will count on if the fans are allowed into the controversial stadium is the support, with a run to the final in Guadalajara last year and the victory this time around seeing the Spartan taken in as one of their own.
"It’s amazing to be back in Mexico & playing in front of my Mexican fans, my 2nd home again. It just feels amazing," said Sakkari.
Ironically taking Muchova's spot after Zhengzhou celebrations
But it wasn't a chance that she is taking lightly with Karolina Muchova who ironically celebrated Sakkari losing to confirm her spot in Cancun had to give it up to her due to injury.
Speaking also about the Czech, she said of course that she wasn't pleased to see another player injured in getting her chance, but is happy to return to Mexico.
"
I wasn’t happy that Karolina was injured, but I was happy to return to Mexico.”
