Angelique Kerber defeated
Dayana Yastremska in the
US Open 1st round and the German underlined her mental toughness as key to the win.
It was an amazing match between
Angelique Kerber and Dayana Yastremska and the German was able to come out on top. It was a dramatic match that finished in a 3rd set tiebreak where Kerber prevailed 7-3. Yastremska served for the match but collapsed at a crucial time.
On the win Kerber said:
"In the third set, when we played the tiebreak, everything can happen. I was just trying to stay focused, play every single ball as good as I can. I think that it was more for me that I won it mentally today. I'm happy about that, how I came back in the third set."
A great comeback win for Kerber who actually lead 2-0 in the 3rd set before losing four straight games to make it 2-4. Yastremska was on the verge of a great victory but the German pulled it out outplaying her opponent in the crucial stretch of the match. Next up is Kalinina who upset Kerber at Roland Garros this year.
