Canada’s tennis star and current world number 25 in the singles category,
Leylah Fernandez, has opened up about how she had to raise her game in the doubles category while playing alongside her sister Bianca Jolie Fernandez in the
Canadian Open.
The
21-year-old, who was the US Open runner-up in 2021, is currently taking part in
the Canadian Open where she will be playing in the semifinal of the doubles
category with her sister on Sunday. Fernandez was recently quoted in a report
where she explained how she had to up her game after being scolded by her
younger sister Bianca. She stated that she cannot even ‘quote’ her sister who
was really mean and ‘angry’.
"I
won't quote her,” she said. “Because she was pretty mean at that time, I think
it was in today's match, but it was the match before where I asked her, So,
what do you see? And then she just let out two, three sentences that were kind
of mean, but it was needed, I needed to hear that to say, Okay, yeah, I'm not
playing well, she's very angry, let me step up now. I don't think she
remembers."
Leylah participated
in both the singles and doubles category in the competition. In the singles
event, her journey ended in the round of 32 as she lost to America’s Ashlyn Krueger
in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. In the doubles category, however,
she and her sister booked their place in the last-four after beating the pair
of China’s Zhang Shuai and France’s Kristina Mladenovic with a score of 7-5,
5-7, 12-10. They will now face the pair of Australia’s Canada’s Gabriela
Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe in the semifinal of the tournament
on Sunday. Dabrowski and defeated Routliffe defeated the pair of Canada’s Ariana
Arseneault and Mia Kupres in the quarterfinal with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.
