Australia’s tennis star Nick Kyrgios offered himself to
coach America’s Coco Gauff prior to her latest coaching move.
The 20-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing
in women’s tennis but sacked Brad Gilbert this week.
Gauff is going through a rough patch. That patch extended even
further as she was knocked out of the US Open after losing in the fourth round
to fellow countrywoman Emma Navarro with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. The defeat
was an even more painful as Gauff was defending her title.
After the result, the current world number three was advised
by a social media user to get rid of her current coach Brad Gilbert. "My
honest advice to @CocoGauff is to sack @bgtennisnation. He became Gauff head
coach in November 2023 and her game has regressed since then. Brad loves
himself more than anyone else and that doesn't work if you are a Head
Coach," a fan posted on the social media platform X — previously known as
Twitter. Another fan wrote that Gauff should be coached by someone like Kyrgios
and the Australian responded by writing: "I'd coach her."
Ironically two weeks later that resurfaced, Gauff decided to sack her coach Brad Gilbert after their partnership. So could Kyrgios' time be now? Unlikely. But it often gives food for thought as to what could happen.
Kyrgios was often regarded as one of the most talented
Australian players on the circuit. The 29-year-old has stayed on the sidelines
for a long period of time because of fitness concerns. He has now been out of
action for nearly two years and has missed as many as eight Grand Slams in the
process. He recently returned to the court during the UTS in New York where he
was forced to withdraw because of a wrist discomfort.
On the other hand, for Gauff, the journey looks a difficult one.
Before coming to New York, she participated in the Cincinnati Open where she
lost in the opening round to Yulia Putintseva with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
