Iga Swiatek extended her dream season with another win and another trophy by beating
Naomi Osaka in straight sets in the
Miami Open final 6-4 6-0.
Osaka played a superb event so far in Miami yet even with the great results there still are several glaring holes in her game. Some of that was exposed today as Swiatek has been playing like the best tennis player in the world for a few weeks now. She will officially become it on Monday and it's thoroughly deserved. Justifying her favourite mantle in this match, Swiatek never looked in trouble against Osaka.
Immediately in the first game, Swiatek put a lot of pressure on Osaka almost breaking her serve but the Japanese player held on. Not long after that she finally found a breakthrough and took a lead that was in the air. Swiatek was creating a lot of great angles and Osaka's lateral movement is not yet up to the highest of level.
That created a lot of issues for her and things got worse as time went by. Swiatek finished off the first set with 6-4 which was a great result for her as she did not hit her first serve at all. It was only 39% of the time but despite that, she was able to overcome Osaka on her 2nd serve winning 12/17 of those points. Osaka in comparison won only 9/20 and that was key.
The 2nd sed featured a similar play but Swiatek was even better. Her serve was working now and it made it fairly easy to win her games. Osaka struggled with her serve and that was game over for her. Overall a deserved win for Swiatek who confirms that she is the deserved world number one with another WTA 1000 trophy.
