As was expected, the 19-year-old
Iga Swiatek earned the Polish Female Athlete of the Year award following that incredible Roland Garros performance and the first Major crown.
Recognized as one of the brightest talents born around 2000, Iga cracked the year-end top-200 charts in 2018 at 17 and made even more impressive progress in the following season to find herself in the top-50. The young Pole was ready for another notable season in 2020, but that almost didn't happen, with only six victories in the opening five WTA events, five of those at Majors!
Entering her last tournament of the season, Swiatek displayed her rich talent and determination, scoring seven dominant victories to lift the Roland Garros crown and become a Major champion at such a young age! With those 2000 points on her tally, Iga finished the season inside the top-20, earning a perfect starting position ahead of 2021 and hoping for more notable results in the season in front of us.
The Pole became the youngest Roland Garros champion since Monica Seles in 1992, securing the trophy after dropping 28 games in 14 sets and leaving all the rivals behind. Iga demolished the former champion Simona Halep in the fourth round and never looked back, using a favorable draw in the quarts and semis and showing no sign of nerves against Sofia Kenin in the final.
Swiatek will not play in Abu Dhabi next week, staying on the practice court and preparing the Melbourne trip ahead of the season's first Major.
