World No.1
Iga Swiatek was tested in the second set against Italy's
Martina Trevisan, but prevailed to score a point for Poland at the
United Cup.
The reigning US Open champion scored a 6-2 6-4 victory on Wednesday, displaying her trademark aggression and precision. The 21-year old obtained an early break to lead 2-0 in the opening set, making quick work of Trevisan's weaker serve and short returns. It came as no surprise when the Polish star quickly forced a second break, before closing out the first set in just over half an hour.
Swiatek seemed to be in control of the second set, capitalizing on a shaky game from her Italian opponent to obtain a second break. However, Trevisan rediscovered her confidence, force the World No.1 to fight for every point during each service game.
Despite creating several break point opportunities, Trevisan was unable to close out on any of her opponent's serve. With Swiatek serving for the match at 5-4, Trevisan had three break point opportunities but was unable to capitalize. Swiatek took the match back to deuce, before eventually drawing the error from her opponent, sealing her team's victory after an hour and 51 minutes.
Team Poland is now tied at 1-1 in this best of five series with Italy, as Lorenzo Musetti secured the first point for the Italians following his victory over Poland's Daniel Michalski in the men's match-up earlier in the day.
