World number one
Iga Swiatek achieved yet another milestone
after her impressive performances at the
Miami Open. The 22-year-old is
regarded as one of the best players currently playing in the women’s singles category.
Swiatek is currently taking part in the WTA 1000 event in the Miami
Open where she was knocked out where she booked her place in the round of 32
after beating Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the second round in straight sets with a
score of 6-1, 6-1.
That was Swiatek’s just 100th match in the WTA
1000 event and it was her 81st win, an incredible feat to stay the least.
Only former world number one
Serena Williams had a better record after 100 WTA
1000 event matches as she registered 87 wins.
Before the tournament started, Swiatek explained in detail
how she was preparing for the upcoming mega-event and what he goals would be, especially
after winning the Indian Wells.
“I don’t feel like we should talk about ifs,” she said back
then. “I’ll do everything step by step, as usual. No need for me to like, go
and already think about winning the trophy, because I haven’t even practised
here.
“I still have many matches to play so we’ll see how it’s
going to go. Obviously, it would be a dream come true. It’s not an easy task. I
felt like I even overachieved two years ago. So this time, I’m just going to do
everything as usual, and I think that is the best way to go.
“In terms of the conditions here, it’s always difficult,
it’s humid and hot. But I remember I really felt comfortable, you know, on the
surface two years ago, so I’ll see what my practice brings me.
“For now, I’m taking everything step by step. I don’t have
any expectations because I know how tough this tournament is. And how hard it
is to handle it sometimes?”
