Iga Swiatek
recently spoke about the lowest point in her career and her career high. The
Polish player gave an interview to Tennis365 after announcing her appearance in
the game TopSpin 2k25, where she will be one of the playable stars for users.
The 4-times
Grand Slam champion burst onto the world tennis stage with her first Grand Slam
title at the 2020 French Open at just 19 years old. Since then, she repeated
the title at Roland Garros in 2022 and 2023, as well as winning the US Open in
2022.
Among
active players, only Venus Williams surpasses her in Grand Slam titles (7),
equaling Naomi Osaka. Additionally, she is assured of reaching 100 weeks as
world No. 1 and has emerged as the leading figure on the WTA Tour in recent
years.
For the
Polish player, the career high was when she won the 2023 WTA Finals and
finished the year as world No. 1, surpassing Aryna Sabalenka thanks to the
title: "It’s actually a tough question," Swiatek said.
"As
I’m constantly learning to enjoy my journey more and more and appreciate
achievements I would say that winning Cancun and finishing 2023 as No 1 is
something that will stay with me forever. But you know… every small win, every
good practice and good day is a high moment for me."
Regarding
the lowest point, she mentioned when she had to deal with the expectations of
the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Swiatek was eliminated in the second round against
former Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4). Swiatek
said, "As for the low ones? Probably managing expectations during Tokyo
2020 was something that took a toll on me."
The current
world No. 1 enjoyed a good streak in recent weeks and secured the
Miami Open
title. Her excellent form made her the top favorite at the Miami Open and to
achieve her second Sunshine Double, something previously achieved only by
Steffi Graf. However, she was eliminated in the fourth round by a convincing
6-4, 6-2 defeat against Ekaterina Alexandrova.
"I
just feel disappointed, for sure, because I thought I was going to play better
here in Miami. But she played an amazing match and for sure was the better play
out there today," Iga Swiatek concluded.
