Alexander Zverev has ended the run of
Fabian Marozsan reaching the semi-finals of the 2024
Miami Open in a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Hungarian who has had an epic tournament but has fallen at the penultimate hurdle to the World Number Five who has reached a 17th Masters 1000 semi-final.
Marozsan defeated top 10 stars Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur en route to the last eight, but won't setup a rematch with a certain Carlos Alcaraz who will face Grigor Dimitrov in the Last Eight. Albeit we could get another chapter of Zverev v Alcaraz after their meetings at the Australian Open and Indian Wells shared one a piece.
Zverev started the match better breaking his opponent in the third game and after that, he saved a break point in game six. He added another to cement it at 6-3 to win the first set and keep up a perfect record so far this tournament set wise. The second set was a bit more of a closer affair. Both failed to convert break point chances.
But Marozsan failed to utilise game points serving to send it into a tie-break and Zverev's stay on court wasn't prolonged as he pounced on the missed chances and one match point was enough for the German to seal the second set 7-5. He will now face Alcaraz or Dimitrov like alluded to and the winner will face Jannik Sinner or Daniil Medvedev who are set for the other semi-final. Zverev though continues his superb record this year while Marozsan ends a fantastic run and after making a splash in Rome last year has begun to be more consistent than a one-hit wonder after dumping out Alcaraz last season.
His Masters 1000 credentials too have been superb as he had a better win ratio than Nadal or Djokovic in these tournaments in a bit of a tennis anomaly before his tie with Zverev and with a new ranking high will head to Monte-Carlo.
