Iga Swiatek won the Indian Wells Masters last year and her title defence began with an utterly impressive win over Claire Liu where she dropped only one game 6-0 6-1.
It was nothing unusual from Swiatek as we saw her perform this way before. The start of the match saw Liu get up 40-15 in her first service game but the Polish player was able to turn around that game and take it. She made it 3-0 and that was the start of a run that lasted 11 games which she won in a row before Liu finally won her own.
The movement of Swiatek was excellent and the high bounce allowed her to get to many balls. She was excellent in preparing the shot which made it fairly easy for them to dominate rallies against Liu who simply could not match the power nor the precision Swiatek had. She applied heavy pressure only losing a step towards the end which is what allowed Liu to avoid a double bagel.
6-0 6-1 was the final score for last year's champion who looked very impressive in the start of this title defence.
