Iga Swiatek comfortably defeated
Belinda Bencic in the
Wimbledon semifinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, advancing to her first final at the All England Club after 71 minutes.. The five-time Grand Slam champion delivered another masterful performance on serve and could complete the 'Surface Slam' this Saturday.
Swiatek arrived at Wimbledon lacking the confidence of previous Grand Slams, amidst inconsistent results over the past year. However, this Saturday, she will seek her sixth Grand Slam title against American Amanda Anisimova, who eliminated World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
First Set
The former World No. 1 started the match remarkably, winning 12 of the first 16 points played and securing an early break, which put her ahead 3-0. The Pole looked precise in a duel that didn't quite find its rhythm, with predominantly short points. When Bencic seemed to have more opportunities to take the initiative in rallies, she couldn't be incisive enough, and it was Swiatek who managed to move her opponent wide to create openings.
Bencic didn't seem to be in the same rhythm as her opponent, and Swiatek relied on her serve to comfortably stay ahead. The Pole capitalized on the pressure on her opponent to grab a love break and close the set 6-2. The five-time Grand Slam champion conceded just five points on her serve, winning 86% of her first serve points compared to only 57% for her rival. Swiatek's 12 winners overwhelmed Bencic's mere six.
Second Set
In the second set, Bencic started by threatening her opponent's serve, managing a couple of break opportunities, but she couldn't convert them. Swiatek recovered from a delicate moment to hold her first service game, and then responded by securing the first break of the set to go up 2-0.
The match never quite found a consistent rhythm, with short points and Bencic unable to offer much opposition to her rival. The World No. 4 didn't let up for the rest of the match, maintained her excellent serving statistics, and secured two more breaks from four opportunities. After a fall by Bencic, Swiatek went up 5-0, virtually sealing her passage to the final. Although Bencic tried to keep pace with her opponent, she couldn't even defend a service game, and the Pole claimed an imposing 6-2, 6-0 victory to advance to her first career Wimbledon final.
The Pole was particularly aggressive from the baseline, hitting a total of 26 winners compared to just 11 from her opponent, in addition to an effectiveness of 70% of points won on serve, against only 44% for Bencic. In the final, she will face American star Amanda Anisimova, who earlier surprised Aryna Sabalenka. Anisimova will play her first career Grand Slam final.
