World number one
Iga Swiatek added another trophy to her tally as she defeated Donna Vekic 6-3 3-6 6-0 in San Diego.
A week of good tennis by the Polish player concluded with another strong performance to defeat a very strong Vekic who came out of nowhere this week. She has been steadily improving over the past few weeks but nobody really expected her to do this well in this spot, and she did rather well.
The first set was a good one with a very solid start from both players. Vekic was playing aggressive tennis as she did all week but it wasn't as clean as it needed to be. Some mistakes and some wonderful play by Iga and the Croatian fell behind 2-5. Two games later it was 6-3 for Iga who looked very comfortable on the court.
Even so, things got really interesting in the second set. Both opened really well but some misses by Swiatek gave Vekic a lead and the Croatian did not give it back. 6-3 for her in the second set and we were headed to a very close 3rd. Or were we?
Unlike the Ostrava Open where Swiatek faltered as the match went on, it was Vekic who faltered here. Poor serving opened up the chance for Swiatek to attack the serve and she did with clinical precision. Three breaks overall and a bagel as a parting gift for Vekic who won only 4 of 16 points played on her serve.
