Iga Swiatek succesfully defended her trophy in Paris winning the
Roland Garros (French Open) once more, beating Karolina Muchova 6-2 5-7 6-4.
In the opening set, it was Swiatek's dominance at its finest with the Pole
taking just 11 minutes to head into a 3-0 lead. Muchova wasn't doing a
lot wrong but was soon in deep trouble. She responded in style at 3-1
with a drop shot lob and then luring a return long to get on the board.
Swiatek threatened the double break at 4-2, but Muchova began to find
her rhythm with a superb crosscourt backhand pass to edge a seven-minute
hold. But after only 46 minutes, Swiatek was on the board at 6-2
breaking to love and despite the mid-set battle, it looked far too easy.
The second set opened well for Swiatek as she took another 3-0 lead and it looked like it would be a very comfortable win for her. Muchova wasn't going to let it go and battled back all the way even taking a 5-4 lead. She didn't serve it out but broke once more to give herself another chance to serve it out. This time around she got it done saving a few break points in the process.
The momentum continued in the final set for Muchova as she took a 2-0 lead but after that, Swiatek was able to win 3 games in a row thanks to supreme shot-making by the Polish player. Still, Muchova wasn't going to give up that easily. She held firm and then broke once more to take a 4-3 lead leaving the Polish player confused with her variety. 3x grand slam champion Swiatek didn't give up either and she broke back to make it 4-4.
Swiatek then held her serve though there were some complications in that game. The final game of the match saw Muchova get tight a bit with a double fault on the final point sealing the deal.
