Iga Swiatek is focused on playing tennis yet her result still get the media talking even though she's not really keen to entertaining some of those narratives.
Swiatek got off her Roland Garros campaign to a good start beating her opponent 6-4 6-0. The win was a good one showing the Polish player fully healthy which is good news after her injury concerns following the Rome Open retirement. The result of the match once again got attention because it was yet another bagel.
There have been talks recently about whether Swiatek is trying to finish off sets against opponents in a specific way but she denied that she's bothered about bagels or anything like that. She just wants to play tennis:
"I don't really think about that [finishing sets 6-0]. It's more I feel the media is doing all that fuss about these results. It's not easy to play these sets anyway, so I'm just trying to keep my focus on what the score is. With all my due respect to my opponents, I don't feel like I should really talk about that kind of stuff, so I'll leave it to Twitter or the media."
The Polish superstar is turning 22 today on May 31st and there won't be any major celebration going on. She's fully focused on the event but she did give her thoughts on how the birthday might look like:
"Small things I would say, I hope I'm going to get some nice gifts and enjoy them. I don't think we'll do something crazy, social-wise I'm already charged up to the maximum level, so I think I'm going to be calm and just chill out tomorrow [Wednesday]."
It comes one day after he win over Bucsa so there will be plenty of recovery going on. Perhaps a cake from the event as well.
