Belarus’ tennis star Aryna Sabalenka has stated that she is still very motivated to achieve greater things in tennis.
The 25-year-old became the number one ranked player in the WTA, replacing Poland’s Iga Swiatek at the helm.
Sabalenka was recently quoted in a report where she stated that she is still motivated to achieve greater things.
“I am still motivated to continue doing important things,” she said. “No matter how hard it was for me to reach the top, I’m not going to relax or lose my desire. I want to finish this season as the best player in the world and stay in that position as long as possible.
“Every time I achieve a goal, I set new ones & this one is very exciting, so I want to give my best tennis here in Beijing. This situation is new for me, it still seems crazy to be there. I know that, right now, I represent all of women's tennis & that generates a great responsibility, but nothing in me has changed.”
Sabalenka became the top-ranked player in the recently concluded US Open where Swiatek faltered in the fourth round to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The Minsk-born took that opportunity from both hands and went to play in the final of the fourth and final Grand Slam.
However, her journey ended in tears as she lost to America’s young tennis sensation Coco Gauff who won the final and the title with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
That performance, however, did not overshadow an incredible year for Sabalenka who ended up playing in the semifinal or beyond in each of the Grand Slams in 2023.
She also won her maiden and till now the only major title earlier this year in Melbourne where she defeated Elena Rybakina in the final with a score of 4–6, 6–3, 6–4.
