Alize Cornet defeated Garbine Muguruza in a great match where the Frenchman had all the answers from very early on.
Cornet was ready for everything Muguruza tried and generally outplayed her opponent from start the finish. The Spanish player arrived in Melbourne in high spirits and believed herself capable of a strong result but she stumbled against Cornet who spoke to the media after the match. She said:
"I'm telling myself that I'm playing probably my last year. I'm not sure yet. When I stepped on the court, I was like, You know what, just enjoy the moment because you don't know if you're going to come back. I think that's what made the difference.”
Cornet is unsure whether she will retire after this year but there is a high chance she does as she thought about it a lot. She explained:
“Playing a whole year, playing 100%, trying to beat this record of consecutive play in a Grand Slam. After that I think it will be a good time for me to retire. I gave so much to this game and to this tennis life. I feel I'm pretty much ready for the next chapter."
